Grevenbroich Approves Smart City Strategy:
A First Step Towards a Digital Future

Grevenbroich, December 18, 2024. On December 12, 2024, the city council of Grevenbroich overwhelmingly approved (45 Yes | 1 No | 0 Abstentions) the Smart City Strategy, marking a significant milestone in the city's digital and sustainable transformation. This strategy was developed collaboratively by bee smart city GmbH and Detecon International GmbH. It was initially presented by Thomas Müller, CEO of bee smart city GmbH, to the Committee for Structural Change, Labor, Digitalization, and Innovation on November 20, 2024, where it was thoroughly discussed and subsequently recommended unanimously to the council for approval.

As part of an extensive participation process—which included a kick-off event, five thematic workshops, and online participation—citizens and numerous stakeholders from business, administration, municipal subsidiaries, and politics were able to contribute their ideas and suggestions.

"With the adoption of this strategy, we have laid a crucial foundation for Grevenbroich's digital future," said Mayor Klaus Krützen. "Through the close involvement and broad commitment of various stakeholders, we were able to develop a strategy that considers the needs of our citizens and offers future-proof solutions for our city."

The strategy focuses on four key areas that aim to drive the sustainable and innovative development of the city:

  • Future-proof (digital) Infrastructure
  • Environment and Climate
  • Mobility
  • Economy and Trade

The strategy includes 24 specific projects that provide a practical approach to reaching the Smart City goals and the overall vision.

"The strategy is designed as a dynamic document that will be continuously developed," emphasizes Christian Henicke, Smart City Manager of the City of Grevenbroich. "What has now been adopted is an initial, practical approach that lays the foundation for future projects. It is particularly important that we now create the infrastructure that serves as the basis for upcoming developments."

Henicke adds, "We are building a digital and sustainable foundation that will enable us to respond flexibly to new requirements and technological developments in the long term. This basic structure allows us to continuously adapt and optimize the Smart City Strategy, ensuring we can always meet the needs of our city and its citizens."

The implementation of the Smart City Strategy is coordinated by the Smart City Manager, who collaborates closely with all relevant departments and external partners. Regular evaluations of the measures ensure that new challenges and developments can be addressed.

Grevenbroich plans to apply for funding to support the strategy's implementation and to further expand cooperation with other municipalities in the Rhein-Kreis Neuss.
